As someone deeply fascinated by the evolution of open-source hardware, the Milk-V Duo (64M) with its 1GHz Dual-Core RISC-V processor and integrated 8051 SBC has been on my radar for a while. Now that I’ve had the chance to put it through its paces, I can confidently say this board is an absolute marvel for its size and price point. It truly redefines what’s possible with compact embedded systems. The form factor is the first thing that strikes you – it’s incredibly small, almost resembling a large USB stick, yet it houses a powerful RISC-V core. This tiny footprint makes it ideal for projects where space is at an absolute premium, such as wearable tech, miniature robots, or deeply embedded IoT devices. The integrated 8051 microcontroller is a brilliant addition, offering a dedicated low-power core for real-time tasks, offloading the main RISC-V CPU and making the system incredibly versatile. The Arduino support is also a bonus. Getting started was surprisingly smooth for a new architecture. The documentation and community support, though still growing, are sufficient to get the basic Linux environment up and running. I was able to compile simple C programs and run Python scripts with ease, showcasing the raw power available from the 1GHz dual-core RISC-V processor. Despite its size, it handles complex computations and even video processing tasks with impressive efficiency. The inclusion of an onboard camera interface and multiple GPIO pins further expands its potential. I’ve already experimented with a small camera module, and the results were promising for object detection or basic video streaming applications. The 64MB RAM might seem limiting at first, but for well-optimized embedded Linux distributions and custom applications, it’s more than sufficient. It would have been better if the ethernet breakout board came with and yet better if it was the 256MB version. These are my suggestions to RoboticsBD. In conclusion, the Milk-V Duo (64M) is a groundbreaking development board for hobbyists, educators, and even professionals looking to explore the RISC-V architecture in a highly compact and efficient package. Its blend of performance, versatility, and open-source nature makes it an exciting platform for innovation. If you’re ready to dive into the future of embedded computing, the Milk-V Duo is an excellent starting point. Highly recommended!
