It detects the reflected light of dust in the air. Especially, it is effective to detect very fine particle like the cigarette smoke. This sensor works perfectly(I cheaked it) , But a little problem, it need to attach a 220ohm resistor and a cepasitor before connecting with arduino and it need two types of power supply, 3.3 and 5 volt . It will be better if there were a module with the sensor.
